Chidder-puller / Czigány Lilla

The “chidder-puller” was used in quarries around the 19th and 20th centuries. The stone was laid out in blocks, using the cracks as a guide. Wedges were hammered into the cracks and then the stone was driven out of the mountain with one or two firm blows. But the first step was to clean the cracks of the excess slag, known as “chidder”.

The chidder is a combination of two layers covering the all-around, usable layer of rock. The first is the surface layer of soil, the second is the underlying layer of unusable rubble. By removing these they gained access to the really high-quality raw material.
