During the fall of 2021, as part of the Experimental Workshop course at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest, we, fourteen third year architecture students of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest, created fourteen “chidder-pullers”. Based on stories, written accounts, research papers and our fantasy, we made up the history of a fictitious object named chidder-puller, the time, place and society in which it was used, and the rituals, roles, lifestyles and needs which might have called it into being.

The result: fourteen imaginary objects that could have been real, with imaginary pasts and stories which could have been true.

The objects that were created, and the myths built around them thus carry different interpretations of reality and the past. Fourteen search results for the word ’chidder-puller’, none of which is truer or falser than the others: each of them contains real and fabricated elements, which however merge together indiscernibly in the exhibition space.

The chidder-pullers and the myths related to them serve as reflective tools for thinking about the present and past. We can only think about the past from our present position, and these thoughts can never be completely objective – the chidder-pullers are products of the present, just like the conceptions about their past.
